Dear All,
A little while ago I asked for suggestions for (hopefully free) software that would help us transpose some music so that my elder son could play it on his clarinet.
Several people replied, and several went to some trouble to ask colleagues and musical family members - I am very grateful.
Here is a summary of responses:
Firstly, a response that questioned whether doing this broke copyright. This response forms a caveat to what follows!
The discussion forum at www.woodwind.org was suggested as another place to ask.
Suggested software was:
Sibelius - scans music and converts to midi file.. There is a student version (around £100) and a free trial of the full product is available.
Finale - scans music and converts to midi file. Finale Notepad is a free version - see http://codamusic.com/NotePad/
Photoscore - scans music and converts to midi file. Photoscore Light is available as a free trial as part of a trial of Sibelius
Noteworthy - a notation programme - http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/
Mozart - http://www.mozart.co.uk/index.htm - free trial available
Voyetra, bought from a well known computer hyperstore for around £30
Cakewalk - free trial available?
Band In A Box
SmartScore (availability is uncertain, although it appears to scan and transpose, for around £50/£60)
C-Net - downloads.cnet.co.uk - Noteworthy Composer and MusicEase, and perhaps more
ABC notation system, invented by Chris Walshaw (http://staffweb.cms.gre.ac.uk/~wc06/ ). The notation system is here: http://www.walshaw.plus.com/abc/, and the free Windows software is here: http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/j.coolegem/abcedit.html
Thanks again,
Keith
