Workshop details:
Retailing in the Twenty-first Century
The Lowry, Salford Quays
Tuesday 30th September
As the significance of services in not only advanced national economies but
also in the global economy as a whole increases, retailing deserves an ever
more careful, multi-disciplinary look. From the contemporary form of urban
landscapes to the employment experiences of an entire range of workers from
those in small family businesses to night-shifters in "hypermarket"s, from
the protection of the environment to the consumption choices, habits and
patterns of populations with shifting demographics, retailing is
increasingly integral to many policy debates and the daily lives of people
around the world. Retailers of various sizes and shapes, in a wide-ranging
array of sector segments, are key figures – sometimes as agents, other times
as targets-- in debates about the changing patterns of land use, the
transformation and reconfiguration of production and supply chains, the
large-scale adoption and use of new technologies, the productivity and
competitiveness of national economies, and, increasingly, the global
interconnectedness of retail provisions.
The growing scholarly interest in retailing reflects the economic, social
and cultural significance of the sector, at the intersection of different
disciplinary traditions. "Retail studies" are now conjoined by inquiry into
various aspects of retailing by specialists in sociology, economics,
geography, employment studies, management, international business, and
marketing, among others. The aim of this one-day workshop is to create a
platform for the exchange of ideas among a multi-disciplinary group of
researchers of retailing and to share theoretical insights and empirical
findings. The emphasis is on the transformation of retailing in the early
21st Century, as seen from different locations and disciplinary
perspectives, with empirical explorations in a variety of settings.
Attendance is free but we would be grateful if anyone interested could let
us know by 22nd September. A provisional timetable is attached and we are
looking forward to your participation with great enthusiasm.
