Dear All,
Following the comments received by Chris and Andrew;
1) I appreciate that not every HER is near a university library -
having been a HERO at Morpeth for Northumberland, the nearest such
would be Newcastle University library (which is mixed regarding
journals; some held, some not, some only start their runs part the way
through).
2) I appreciate that not every HERO can drive - as an aside neither
could Ian A Richmond.
3) I put "e.g. university, libraries" - see the Inspire scheme
information for other libraries included. The Lit + Phil mentioned
isn't a university library within the scheme, neither isn't the Natural
History Society of Northumbria which is in the scheme in the northeast.
4) Local archaeological or natural history societies might also have
their own library collections - e.g. for Andrew what about contacting
the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society's
library at Carlisle? (Catalogue on-line of holdings and less distance
than to Glasgow or Edinburgh). I thought that the DGNHAS had its own
library anyway (the website lists a librarian).
Hope that clarifies things for you and doesn't sound too sharp,
Keith

Or, in our case, 85 miles to Glasgow or Edinburgh. At least in
Scotland
most work is reported in the annual publication 'Discovery and
Excavation in Scotland'. That, and an annual data exchange with the
NMRS, means that we probably pick up 95%+ of the work undertaken
within
the area,. Like other respondents, I'd hope to pick up anything else
through already established channels, rather than in national
journals.
