Hi Nick,
Have you tried the General View of the Agriculture of the County of...
in your case for the North Riding? or any other agricultural 'manuals'
of the later 18th/early 19th century. I've had a look at the third
edition for Northumberland (which also included Cumberland and
Westmorland) - no joy for you, but the standard proforma layout chapter
six is on boundary walls, fences and gates - so might have been noticed
in other counties, albeit within the variable nature of the authors
agricultural experience, knowledge etc. etc. Angus Winchester's (2000)
The Harvest of the Hills... has various notes on sheep creeps and the
like, which might also be worth a look, which I took as my guide for
the retention of the same (stiles, sheep creeps, gates, gate posts
etc.), now blocked or not, within an ESA scheme.
Hope that helps,
Keith
