===> Extended Hours Access Scheme Directed Enhanced Service

The Directions to PCTs giving the legal basis for implementing the
Directed Enhanced Service for GP practices to extend their opening
hours are now in force. PCTs are required to offer the DES to all GMS
and PMS practices in their area not already providing extended opening
hours to the appropriate specification. Accompanying guidance is also
available. All the relevant documents can be accessed at:

===> Five new Clinical Directed Enhanced Services (DES) agreed for
2008/09

NHS Employers and the General Practitioner Committee of the BMA have
agreed five new clinical directed enhanced services as part of the

===> Equitable Access to Primary Medical Care - New Documentation

New Equitable Access to Primary Medical Care (EAPMC) documentation has
been developed to cover:

1) Contractual safeguards for Vertical Integration - Template Contract
wording to be used as Clause 83 in the main body Contract

2) Guidance on the level of detail to disclose to Bidders on Selection
Criteria for ITT Evaluations

3) ITT Evaluation Requirements Register directly corresponding to the
EAPMC GP Practice and GP-Led Health Centre Contracts

The new wording will be integrated into the Template EAPMC Contracts
and updated on the EAPMC website shortly.

===> CPPE launches "focal point" - a new learning format

The Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) has released a
new type of learning format to complement its existing programmes.
Designed to meet the training needs of a wide range of pharmacy
professionals, "focal point" is open to all registered pharmacists and
pharmacy technicians practising in England.

===> Pharmacy White Paper - Consultation Events

During October, the DH is hosting a series of six national events to
support the consultation and listen to the views of stakeholders.

All pharmacy stakeholders are welcome but we would particularly like
representatives from public and patient organisations, community
pharmacists and appliance contractors. The agenda for two of the
events has been tailored to these groups and we would welcome
delegates of this type to attend these events where possible.

===> Embedding Prevention in NHS Practice Forums

In conjunction with DH and Colgate, NHS PCC is hosting four free
autumn events designed to help PCTs apply the new DH evidence-based
toolkit 'Delivering Better Oral Health in practice' and to proactively
commission for prevention. The forums will provide advice and best
practice examples on how to incorporate the recommendations of this
guidance at every level, from commissioning to delivering primary

===> GDC Consultation - Declaration of involvement with a Dental Body
Corporate

The GDC's latest consultation is to seek views on whether registrants
who are members of, involved with, or employed by a Dental Body
Corporate (DBC) should be required to declare this in the practice
literature, including treatment planning forms and documents
explaining the surgery's DBC's complaints process. The GDC is keen to
hear from all GDC registrants, as well as professional associations,
patients and patient groups who could all be affected by these

===> GDC Conference: Legal, Ethical and Clinical Issues in Dentistry -
9th October, Woburn House, London

The GDC is organising the conference in conjunction with the patient
safety charity, AvMA (Action Against Medical Accidents). It will
examine the impact of recent reforms on dentists and patients and
tackle medico-legal issues facing dentistry. It will also focus on how
to improve patient safety and in particular how to learn from mistakes
to ensure a safer workplace. More details are available at:
