Many thanks to all.
I went out (to Halfords) and had a look at all models - and bought the
basic Tomtom one with UK and Ireland fitted.
The additional features - wider screen, maps of Europe, blue tooth,
detection of mobile cameras - don't actually fill any needs I have - or
am likely to have - in the near future, and the technology is cheap
enough now to be able to replace it in the near future if I do find a
need..
And yes I do know that I could have bought it more cheaply elsewhere!

PS I have a policy on cars - neither car nor contents look attractive -
but I have succumbed to all these warning - and I now possess a gear and
brake lock.
