Dear all
Gendersite, a new website on gender and the built environment (research
by QMUL and Women's Design Service, funded by UrbanBuzz) is now live at:
www.gendersite.org
I am emailing to encourage you to visit the website and recommend it
to colleagues and students, and also to invite you to attend the launch
event to be held at Queen Mary on Thursday 2 October from 1pm
(invitation attached).
The website comprises a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary database of
bibliographic references, policy documents and web resources relating
to issues around gender and the built environment. Standing alongside
it are a series of case studies highlighting those issues and relating
directly to references included in the database. The aim is to
continue updating and expanding the resource as a whole in the future.
The project was developed as part of a knowledge exchange programme
designed to gather together existing academic research across the social
sciences, gender studies, architecture and planning, and make it readily
accessible, in one location, to practitioners and professionals working
in the field of the built environment. For academics and students it
will also provide a valuable resource for teaching and further research,
raising awareness of the work that has already been done within
different disciplines, and pointing the way forward for new work to be
done in the future.
The launch event on 2 October includes a keynote speech by Ruth Reed,
President Elect of the Royal Institute of British Architects; stalls
showcasing work by built environment and equalities organisations; an
exhibition of work by women architects; guided tours of the local area;
and an evening reception and networking.
I hope that you can visit www.gendersite.org soon, and come along to
the launch event if you are in London. Please forward details of both to
anyone else who might be interested.
with best wishes
Alison
