Call for Papers for proposed Panel for IASFM 12
Paper proposals are invited to join several papers in a double panel
planned for IASFM 12 entitled:
*Linking, Mixing, Crossing; Living with and within borders and
boundaries in conflict, displacement and return*
This panel explores the nature, status and meaning of borders in the
opaque context of displacement and return. The imposition or assertion
of borders, internal, external, physical, political, social and symbolic
are fundamental to the way in which conflict induced displacement is
conceptualized and negotiated. How are these boundaries enacted,
questioned, contested, subverted and managed by local populations,
forced migrants and returnees? Can borders be conceived as linking
mechanisms as much as as technologies and discourses of separation? What
are the implications for populations living on either side or across
borders, whether international or locally constructed? How are
livelihoods in border regions affected during conflict as well as in the
‘post-conflict’ interim phase and to what extent are borders considered
in any substantial way, in discussions of post-conflict reconstruction,
rehabilitation and development? How do cross-border migratory livelihood
strategies affect the idea of ‘home’ and ‘return’ among returnee
populations? What are the impacts of these cross-border contacts on the
reconfiguration of identity and social relations, including gender
relations? This panel considers such questions with reference to issues
arising from Sudan’s various borders and boundaries, and in the context
of sub Saharan Africa more broadly.
Please email your abstracts directly to the panel convenors, Katarzyna
Grabska ([log in to unmask]) and Tania Kaiser ([log in to unmask])
