Hi Kirsten,
Firstly, well done in doing so well so far! I wish I'd had the energy, and, frankly, the encouragement to do that.
I think that a really interesting issue to research would be the impact of having a sibling with a disability/impairment. My brother was great when we were growing up (I, too, have spina bifida, which, of course, meant lots of stays in hospital, and probably more attention from my parents) and I don't think he resented me TOO much, but there must have been times...
Also, how about bonding - mother/baby - is the bonding process harmed by almost immediate surgical intervention (or do they do things differently than in my day?) Most babies, once born, get to spend time with their mothers immediately, but I did not, and possibly you didn't either, as I was whipped away to have my back closed up. THEN she probably couldn't hold me for ages. I don't think it DID damage our bond but there may be others who say otherwise.
There are a lot of kids whose families cannot cope with a disabled child, so they end up living in a home or with foster parents - I certainly went to school with a few. What about the aftermath of that?
I could probably go on and on! I'm sure others have other ideas, too.
Good luck, and I'm sure that the honours degree is not far away!
Cheers,
Helen

Subject: Help with dissertation
Hello
I hope you don't mind my asking, but is there anyone who would be able to help me with my undergraduate dissertation?
To explain, I have just become the first disabled (qualified) youth worker in Leeds (as far as we know) and want to specialise in disability. I have spinabifida myself, so will be able to use my own knowledge and contacts, but would be very grateful for some expert advice once I start putting it together. I am only 5% from a 1st class honours and want to get there! There isnt anyone in our youth and community department who is really interested or knowledgeable about disability, which is why I am looking for outside help.
My subject is "the impact of physical disability on the young person and family" - if anyone is interested in knowing more or knows someone who may be able to assist me - literally, reading and commenting on it, providing ideas on where to research, and then of course celebrating my success, I would be very grateful.
Please could you email me - [log in to unmask]
Thanks very much in advance
Kirsten Battle
