Greetings (and apologies for cross-posting),
Based on the success of this past summer's webinar series, Bolchazy-Carducci
Publishers is offering three more online seminars this fall. Please visit
http://www.bolchazy.com/webinars.html to reserve your spot.
Here's the fall lineup:
Thurs., October 16, 4-6 EST (3-5 CST): "Oral Interpretation of Latin Poetry:
The Delight of Latin Aloud" Robert P. Sonkowsky, University of Minnesota,
Emeritus Professor of Classics
This webinar will explore Latin pronunciation and the linguistic theory
behind it. Three main components will be explored over the two-hour webinar:
1. Background: pronunciation in Historical Linguistics. Evidence from
ancient grammarians, inscriptions, etc., laid out by scholars such as Allen,
Sturtevant, and Brittain. Practical comparisons throughout the history of
Latin.
2. Oral performance of Latin masterpieces: ancient evidence, modern theory.
See Sonkowsky's "Delivery in Ancient Rhetorical Theory," TAPA, 1959, but
much more graphic evidence in Latin dramatic, lyric, epic poetry, e.g.,
Sonkowsky's "Tranio in Plautus' Mostellaria" in Comparative Drama, 1992.
3. Examples from today will be listened to. The class will be encouraged
(but not required) to respond with their own oral reading of some lines.
Modern theoretical underpinning: Ancient theory leads to Modern
Stanislavianism.
Tues., October 21, 7-9 EST (6-8 CST): "Unlocking Catullus" LeaAnn Osburn,
Teacher Emerita and Helena Dettmer, University of Iowa
Catullus is the lead author on the Advanced Placement Latin Literature
syllabus (for now, anyway...). In this webinar, Professor Helena Dettmer,
author of Love by the Numbers and co-author of the Catullus Workbook, will
present a literary analysis of one section of the long poem 64 and of
several shorter thematically related poems. LeaAnn Osburn, also co-author of
the Catullus Workbook and long-time Advanced Placement teacher, will discuss
how to prepare students effectively via everyday classroom practice for the
other aspects of the Advanced Placement Examination: content, translation,
meter, grammar, and syntax and will present visually oriented way to review
just prior to the examination.
Thurs., Nov. 6, 3-5 EST (2-4 CST): "The Pleasures of Teaching Lucretius"
Bonnie Catto, Assumption College
There are few ancient authors as compelling as Lucretius: scientist, poet,
philosopher, and passionate observer of nature. While Caesar, Cicero and
Vergil have long vied for first place in the classical curriculum,
Lucretius' treatment of universal human matters rightfully earns him a place
in their company. Informed by the latest in Lucretian scholarship, Catto
focuses on excerpts from De Rerum Natura, and discusses linguistic and
intellectual aids for translating and comprehending this difficult but
magnificent Roman poet.
Cost:
$99.00 per webinar.
$249.00 for all three webinars.
Please write me off-list if you have any questions.
