My view on CL?
I have never been so despondent about a subject in my life and the
government seem to know nothing but expect us to make decisions where
the 'experts' fear to tread. At the moment CL is stagnant and boring and
nothing is happening. If we don't get some decisions on it soon LA's
will forget all about it and move on to the next big issue.
Oh I just don't know where that came from!

I think I must know a lot then Steve . . .
At the risk of starting another heated JISCmail debate, now that the
summer's over, what does everyone think of the current state of play
with contaminated land generally ?
Both ENDS and BB have reported various consultants, organisations and
officials saying some quite different and contradictory things about the
Way Forward outcomes, and from my own discussions I'm not too sure there
is much of a consensus of views.
Are we now all happy we know what contaminated land looks like ?
Do we think DEFRA have done a stirling job with contaminated land, and
there's hardly anything further left to do ?
Do we all know what we're doing in the absence of SGVs ?
Do we think/want the Soil Framework Directive will/to change things ?
Do we know what we want from the Skills Strategy and SiLC ?
Is there any specific guidance/research/policy change we're still
desperate for ?
There's been so much published recently it's difficult to keep up - or
is that just me.
PS: Thanks to everyone who replied off-newsgroup to my email regarding
recent determinations at Alney Island - some very interesting comments
and discussions.

The most important thing to know is what you don't know!

Definition of plenty....
It really shows how active and progressive the depth of UK experience
with risk assessment that its taken till now to be where the EPA where
in the 90s.........
CLR10 was published in 2002, before then the majority of site
assessments were done using ICRCL, as there was no statutory requirement
to do quantitative risk assessment before 2000
I would wager that the majority of people actually doing risk assessment
at the present time (i.e running the models etc) have only 1-5 years
experience

There were plenty of people using quantified risk assessments more than
8 years ago. I know of large practices that were using models such as
Risc-Human and USEPA models.

Subject: Research Study - Volunteers wanted!
Dear All,
Firstly let me introduce myself. My name is Natalie Cropp and I am
undertaking an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Environmental Technology
through the University of Surrey. The EngD is equivalent to a PhD with
some additional training requirements and an emphasis of the industrial
application of the research. My specific area of interest is in
Brownfield development looking at decision tools and guidance.
I am currently carrying out a study of contaminated land professionals
to gain an understanding of "expert judgment" used in contaminated land
risk assessment.
I would like to know whether there is anyone out there that would be
willing to take part in my study. Im looking for experienced
contaminated land risk assessors from any background (8 or more years
experience required).
The study itself involves the assessment of a portfolio of hypothetical
sites put forward by a housing developer who is looking to invest in
land for development. Participants are required to review a brief site
description and some limited chemical data to make a judgement on the
potential for risk from contamination. A general impression of risk is
all that is required - so no
detailed assessments (and no need to touch the new CLEA v1.03!).
Beyond my own EngD research this work forms part of a pledge for action
in response to the National Brownfield Skills Strategy (pledge
attached).
If you would be willing to participate in this study, or would like more
information before committing please contact me ([log in to unmask] or
[log in to unmask]).
Natalie Cropp
(Research Engineer)
