20 metres squared or 20 square metres?
If you had a plot 20m by 20m I would imagine that a half competant
person could feed a family of 4 all year round; our allotment is about
8m by 15m and we are still eating last years' runner beans from the
freezer.
A plot 4m by 5m however - I can't see you growing any more than a
few tasters of various items - so probably enough to satisfy the
demand for the nuCLEA family in the guidance.
Looking at the guidance it appears I should be providing only 13% of
my potato consumption from my allotment (with the other 77%
bought). In my experience this is daft as I don't buy potatos until the
Jersey Royals come in in the spring, being self-sufficient throughout the
rest of the year, and I'm not even a very good allotment holder - the
experts on our plot probably do not buy much fresh veg all year round.
It seems to me that the assumptions CLEA makes are just guesses
based on a few facts doted around from various sources strung
together by some fairly tenuous survey data - we all know how
unreliable surveys of the public are because most people, when
surveyed, admit to lying during surveys. Anyway - its all good fun. I
can't wait for the BGS survey of London soils to show that the capital is
sunbathing on a soil of BaP and dioxins high enough to kill them all
(according to CLEA).
