You should be very careful to first remove all catalog associations
from the course before doing that, as you will afterwards have no way
of doing so, leading to catalog inconsistencies and problems. And yes,
this is very much at your own risk and unsupported, and odd behaviors
may arise from the change. Sorry, I wish there were an easy and kosher
way for doing this, but so far there isn't, and I don't see many
enhancement requests filed for it either.
