VACANCY
Post: Research Associate
Institution: Department of Computer Science, University of Leicester, UK
Salary: Grade 7 - £29,138 to £33,780 (Appointment will be made at lower
end of scale)
Duration: Available from October 2008 to September 2010 (Fixed Term
Contract)
Ref: R3881
Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work with Dr. Effie
Law ([log in to unmask]) and Prof. Thomas Erlebach ([log in to unmask]) on
the EC-funded technology-enhanced learning (TEL) projects "80Days:
Around an Inspiring Virtual Learning World in Eighty Days"
(http://www.eightydays.eu/) and "MeRLab: Innovative Remote Laboratory in
the E-training of Mechatronics" (http://www.merlab.eu/). The overall aim
of 80Days is to contribute to the vision of developing educational games
that can cost-effectively foster learning with fun and pleasure, and
will develop a geography game prototype realising gaming/learning
scenarios. MeRLab aims to introduce good practices into the vocational
training in mechatronics with state-of-the-art ICT and established
methodological and didactic approaches, and will prepare an
e-mechatronics course with both theoretical and practical training being
implemented fully online (i.e. innovative remote lab). It is critical to
evaluate and validate the quality and impact of these TEL artefacts from
technological, pedagogical and other perspectives. In both projects, the
University of Leicester assumes a significant role in coordinating and
implementing the evaluation and validation trials. Applicants should
have or be nearing completion of a PhD in the field of Human Computer
Interaction (HCI), Computer Science, Psychology, Education or a related
subject, and have good knowledge and skills in ICT. Applicants should
have a research record in evaluation methodologies as applied in the
domain of HCI and TEL in general and in digital games as well as online
experimentation in particular. It is also essential to have a basic
knowledge of pedagogical theories and cognitive psychology.
