the photo of Sarah as teenager, dated 1856, was taken by William Bambridge a commercial photographer, apparently for Queen Victoria, Sarah's godmother and patron. the only copy I've seen is in an album in the Royal Collection [Photographs]. it's reproduced in my exhibition catalogue BLACK VICTORIANS (Lund Humphries) together with another v intersting photo from Victoria's collection, a group portrait of Naval veterans in 1854 in full Royal Hospital fig, including one - maybe two - old gentlemen of African ancestry. These could be among the earliest photographic portaits of Black and certainly the veterans are the oldest such sitters
