Hi Duncan,
Tyloses are an indication of heartwood but lack of tyloses does not necessarily
mean sapwood. If you are trying to sort this out in view of using material for
radiocarbon dating then I would be very very cautious and certainly make sure
that the material chosen is suitable for the dating question being asked. If at
all in doubt, don't use the material.
