General:
An opportunity has arisen for an individual wishing to build on their expertise providing statistical support, training and advice to analytical chemists, molecular biologists and forensic scientists.
The bioinformatics and statistics team provides statistical expertise and modelling tools for the design of, and complex data analysis arising from, high accuracy (bio)analytical measurements as part of LGC’s designated role as a National Metrology Institute and forensic data interpretation, including familial searching and DNA profile matching for paternity and criminal identity applications.
Job purpose:
Provision of statistical support and advice to analytical chemists, molecular biologists and forensic scientists, supporting training courses run by LGC and preparing guidance on statistical procedures applicable to chemical measurement. There is scope for a wider role in promoting statistics use and development of statistical and related methods, including preparation and publication of external publications.
Key result areas:
* Provision of statistical advice and support to measurement scientists, within and outside the laboratory
* Supporting projects on forensic applications
* Preparing and delivering training in statistics for analytical chemists and biologists
* Dissemination/presentation of results to internal and external audiences.
Candidate specification:
The successful candidate should have a good honours degree in statistics or a related discipline, and at least four years experience, ideally gained through a higher degree with additional work experience, in the practical application of statistical and mathematical methods in a scientific environment, preferably related to analytical chemistry and biological measurement.
The successful candidate will be expected to show:
* a sound understanding of statistics
* some experience of scientific programming
* an ability to contribute to successful delivery of contract projects through the planning and execution of workflow to time-scale and budget
* self-reliance and self-motivation, but be a team player able to operate in a commercial environment
* effective oral and written communication with colleagues and collaborators
* a commitment to quality.
Experience of statistical data processing using R on MS Windows is essential. Experience of training scientific staff in statistical methods, programming in Perl and other languages on open source platforms and practical experience of MS Excel will be advantageous. Experience of the following will also be viewed favourably: Experimental design; multivariate statistics or chemometrics for calibration and classification; application of Bayes’ theorem, especially in forensic applications; Monte Carlo and bootstrapping methods.
