Thanks for calling this unexpected feature to our attention, Max. Can't quite remember
under what circumstances I read a number of Hardy's novels, but am certain I first
encountered his poetry in Donald Finkel's class on Modern American & British Poetry.
Then, Donald Davie presented a more startling argument for the modernity of 'Poems
1912-1913", which I later elaborated upon when I taught Modern British Poetry..
There's an individual I know who has been collecting books which were once owned by
Thomas Hardy.
I've seen very few 19th century first editions of Hardy's books surface in the U.S., though
now online . . .
