Mike -
This message about the Yarls Wood detainee is most worrying. HM Prison
Service has Prison Service Orders that are long-term mandatory instructions which
are intended to last for an indefinite period. These orders for example PSO
_2855 – ‘prisoners with disabilities_
(http://www.hmprisonservice.gov.uk/resourcecentre/psispsos/listpsos/
http:/pso.hmprisonservice.gov.uk/PSO_2855_prisoners_with_disabilities.doc) ’ and PSO 3050 – ‘continuity of
healthcare for prisoners’ would, under prison service rules, protect the
interests of this lady in Yarls Wood. However places like Yarls Wood are
covered by Immigration Removal Centre Rules 2001, and I have not yet had time to
search for and look at whether there are comparable sections in place. There
is little doubt though that this lady’s treatment is covered by the human
Rights legislation, and she should not be subjected to such dangerous and
degrading treatment as that described in the email.
If you or anyone else has a little more time than me, for further
information on the PSOs and Centre Rules look at the Home Office website
_http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/_ (http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/) or the prison Service
website _http://www.hmprisonservice.gov.uk/_ (http://www.hmprisonservice.gov.uk/)
Hope this can help in some way -
All best
Jenny
