Geographies of Waste and Disposal: Connecting society, environment,
and the economy
Organizers: Risa Whitson, Ohio University and Kate Parizeau,
University of Toronto
As a fundamental site of intersection between social and natural
systems, waste has long been the focus of geographic research. This
is the case particularly in the areas of environmental geography and
human-environment relations, where issues of waste management and
environmental justice have been addressed. More recently, geographers
focusing on human and social systems have also begun to approach the
concept of waste from new perspectives, expanding research on the
subject to include a focus on waste-centered livelihoods, a critique
of the throwaway society (Gregson, Metcalfe, an Crewe 2007),
intersections between civil society and waste management (Davies
2007), and theorizations of the act of disposing as a way of managing
absence (Hetherington 2004). This has led to new ways of theorizing
and understanding waste in geography, connecting waste to identity,
social relations, and social processes. This session seeks to bring
together geographers working on varied aspects of waste and disposal
into conversation in order to further explore the potential of
thinking spatially about waste and disposal. Possible topics include,
but are not limited to:
- What is waste? Theorizing waste
- Placing waste in society: Thinking geographically about waste
- Re-thinking waste: trash and treasure
- Disposable people: connecting waste to social justice
- Managing waste for social and environmental sustainability
- Intersections of gender, race and class (etc.) with waste
production, consumption, and management
- Formal and informal recycling and reuse
- Waste crossing borders
- Environmental issues/policy and waste management
- Connecting social, environmental, and economic justice concerns
- Connecting production, consumption, and disposal
