Hi all
I wonder if anyone has information specifically on this individual to help Anne move forward. I can of course help out with the general religious context, but don't know Louisa,
Many thanks
Myrtle
Hi Mrtyle,
Further to our brief conversation at the VAHS conference thank you for offering to pass on my interests to various Irish history networks you have contact with.
I am working on a revision of the life of Louisa, 3rd Marchioness of Waterford (1818-1891). Louisa is usually referred to as an aristocratic amateur artist. My approach is to view her life from the 1850's as a personal religious mission. Whilst she was not a public speaker I am exploring whether her art can be considered as the vehicle for her mission message.
She was raised in the High Church Anglican tradition but in the 1850's seems to have undergone something of a religious crisis that resulted in a rejection of high churhc ritual.
I am interseted to find out more about the general religious discourse in Ireland at that time: whether there is evidence of a general move away from high Anglicanism.
I know that the Waterford's Irish home was at Currahgmore and the nearest town is Portlaw. In the period the major employer in Portlaw was a family called Malcolmson who were Quakers. I understand that it is possible that Louisa had some contact with this family but have drawn a blank in finding hard evidence.
A biography was written posthumously by Augustus Hare in 1893 and is much quoted by others in writing about her. Hare refers to various acts of paternalistic benevolence towards the Curraghmore estate dependants initiated by Lousia during her life there (1842-1859) and I am interested to find out more about this. Again finding the evidence is proving difficult.
I would be grateful for any help you offer in making contact with ny networks that might be interested. Please feel free to pass on my email address.
Thanks for your help
Anne Hattersley
