Not as involved/rich as you propose, but it is also possible to involve
anyone who is unable to access the 3D client by mirroring typed chat
to a more accessible chat client.
e.g. Sloodle web-intercom allows two way chat between users in
Second Life and Moodle users in a text-chatroom.
