perhaps, I think we do need to be wary about framing it as
disorienting though. i think it very much depends on your cohort.
I've actually never had any of my students call it disorienting. Some
said it was frustrating when they couldn't figure out how to get off
orientation island, which required the explanation, 'did you read the
signs?', which resolved the issue.
here is what I'd do:
first class: show them sl, show them how i register an avatar, give
them a tour of cool things to do, things to see. assign them to register
second class: deal with those not yet registered, demonstrate
clothing management, how to dress without taking off clothes, how to
manage appearance, and give them the 10 minute talk about 'in class
behavior, professional behavior, and their own time' assignment:
visit info island, visit svarga, visit linden village, visit the
governors mansion, visit 3 other places of their own interests. try
to do it with friends, save screenshots, upload them to flickr or
snapzilla.
class 3, off we go.
