Transport Studies Unit (TSU)
Title of post: Research Assistant (TSU)
Grade 7 £27,466 - £33,780 pa (or Grade 6 £24,403-£29,138pa for less
experienced candidates)
The Transport Studies Unit at the University of Oxford is a major partner in a
new multi-institutional study to evaluate the impacts of a £150 million project
designed to revitalise walking and cycling across the UK. One of the research
projects the TSU is involved in is the “Visions of the role of walking and cycling
in 2030” which seeks to examine ways in which more people might be
encouraged to walk and cycle in the future.
This is a 3-year post introduced to carry out the above research in line with
the research tasks for which the TSU is responsible. The research will rely on
qualitative and quantitative analysis, expert workshops to develop visions of
alternative futures, and the use of visualisation software to help users
understand how futures might appear. The research work will be supervised by
the TSU director and a senior researcher.
The successful candidate will require an academic degree (B.A. or Masters) in
a social science subject (e.g. geography, planning, economics, public policy,
environmental science); knowledge of and experience in working with a range
of qualitative and quantitative research methods; ability to carry out
interviews and prepare questionnaires for analysis, and the use of statistical
packages. Knowledge of and experience in working with visualisation software
and some knowledge of scenario building and visioning of futures are also
required.
