Dear Philipp and Sheeba,
This is indeed an annoying Matlab bug in R2008a (7.6).
Please try the attached patched spm_select.m: with this Matlab version,
you should (hopefully) now see Accept/Cancel buttons so that you should
not be stuck in Edit mode for the rest of your life.
