Pearls are made up of layers of cristalline calcium carbonate. With time and
wear, the outer layers tend to slowly exfoliate, until they dropdown. While
the process is going on, the gloss of the pearl is more or less lost, the
more so as foreign matter insert itself in the gap(s) between layers. I do
not know how the healer heals ; I suppose this is by removing the layers
that have started to exfoliate, until he reaches the "healthy" core.
