Thank you for your reply Stewart, all good points, but I feel we still need to promote ourselves and ensure that the JE process is not used as a lever to reduce our grades and salaries. If we get hung up in detail, at this point, then events will overtake us while we 'chat' amongst ourselves, and then we will not be able to influence what is happening as we speak.

Each person who goes through this JE process will complete a form that lists their responsibilities and the benefits to their authority. It seems one of the variables in this process is the ability (or not) of each person to complete that form to show their worth. I wonder if each JE uses the same program to complete the process, and what influence Line Management has on the completion, and hence result, interesting thoughts.

I would welcome proposals on how we quantify the Records Managers role (and of course the other positions within records management). I am sure between us we can come up with a matrix of responsibility that reflects accurately the work we do and hence the grades we should be scored to. There are core competencies for our profession, it should be a process of identifying these and then putting together the mix that each RM does to come up with one that matches each job. We will probably find that different authorities have their own view on what they should be doing in this area, and it may not match what should actually be happening, but that is another matter.

Don't lets lose sight of what is happening here!

Bryan

I think this links in well with the recent discussions around how

successful the profession is at selling itself and the business benefits

it can provide. Only when we can fully show these benefits will our job

evaluations reflect what we a truly worth...

Another challenge we face in job evaluations and comparisons is the

disparate responsibilities different Records Managers have, some have

DPA/FOI, some don't. Some have EDRMS, some don't. Some have a Hard Copy

records centre, some don't... the list goes on, so does a generic

records manager role exist?

Dear All,

Following on from the responses I had a few months ago asking about

salaries and the results of my own job evaluation exercise I agree with

Brian in that we should present a united front one this. As Records

Managers we are not appreciated for the responsibilities that we hold

i.e. compliance with statutory legislation. I am appalled at the

significant decreases that are coming out of these evaluations

particularly when compared with the Private Sector. It is about time

that Records Managers should be recognised for the professionals that

they are!!!

Subject: Records Management Job Evaluation in Local Government

What do you think our profession is worth in Local Government?

Many Local Government Authorities have or are currently going through a

job

evaluation process and it appears, from initial discussions with my

colleagues,

that our profession - Records Management, is coming out of this with

lowered

grades and salaries, causing upset and dissatisfaction amongst our

members.

I am asking the community to band together on this and ensure our

profession

is treated fairly in the Local Government job evaluation process.

I will be sending my information to the RMS (Records Management Society)

in

the hope that they will take the lead in ensuring a co-ordinated

approach to

establishing our worth for the job we do in Local Government.

Please feel free to send me your experiences and/or thoughts on this

(offline)

and I also welcome a discussion on line if appropriate, and I will

ensure the

information is passed on to the RMS to help enlighten those who appear

to be

downgrading the valuable job we do.

We need to show a common front at this time.
