PhD Position on the formation and evolution of starburst clusters
Physikalisches Institut, University of Cologne, Germany
Contact: Andrea Stolte <[log in to unmask]>
A PhD position is available at the University of Cologne
in the framework of the Emmy Noether research group.
The formation and evolution of starburst clusters.
Starburst clusters are the formation loci of the most massive
stars observed in the present-day universe.
These clusters are rare in the Milky Way, where they form under
exceptional circumstances in the densest parts of spiral arms
and at the very centre of the Galaxy.
The analysis of spectroscopic and photometric observations
of young, massive Milky Way star clusters forms the core of
the thesis project. With the exploitation of modern adaptive
optics instrumentation on 8-10 m class telescopes, membership
information in starburst clusters can now be obtained
for the first time. In combination with near-infrared
spectral classification, the membership information allows
the reconstruction of the initial stellar mass distribution and
the spatial structure and dynamical evolution of Milky Way
starburst clusters.
The position is available for 3 years on the German TVoeD 13/2
salary scale (formerly BAT IIa/2), including social benefits
and health insurance.
Previous knowledge in infrared astronomy, adaptive optics, or stellar
populations is of advantage. Interested applicants should send
a CV, list of publications, and relevant documents (masters or
diploma certificate) in pdf format to [log in to unmask]
The deadline for applications is September 30th, 2008.
