Hi,
Thanks a lot to everyone who responded to my query about disgust-inducing drinks! We'll definitely try out some of the suggestions before deciding which way to go.
For your information (and possibly amusement), here are the ideas I have received so far:
- Aloe Vera Juice (colon cleanser) from any good health shop might be a possibility... it tastes awful!
- I'd play around with food colourings - they're harmless. You could also, possibly, play about with food flavourings and expectations, i.e. a drink that looks really fresh and inviting but actually tastes sour.
- Have an accomplice - Chris - who is somehow known to have had diarrhoea during the morning. Maybe the researcher queries ' Will Chris be helping us today?' Then he comes in bringing the drinks...
- Breast milk? Meant to be very good for you, but seems to induce disgust in all but babies.
- Paul Rozin, I think it was, used to render water disgusting by dipping a (plastic or sterilised) cockroach in it. Possibly even telling the study participants that it was water from a city system (i.e. perfectly clean but had been through several human beings already), versus water direct from a fresh mountain spring, might be enough.
- We had many complaints about the taste of our Robinson's orange drink with added saccharin (it really isn't pleasant) in a glucose study that we conducted. That would allow you to pass ethics and you could tell the Ss that you have added a sweetner that is unpleasant to emphasize the bad taste. Otherwise you could add a gelatenous thickening agent. That would be repulsive!
- You could try a disgusting combination. For example, something creamy in lemonade to make it congealed would be pretty disgusting but I don't think it's harmful as the cream isn't actually off - just congealed. Rene Russo had a disgusting looking drink in the Thomas Crown Affair but that might be expensive and hard to come by!
Thanks again,
Martin
