Hi All,
Yesterday we announced on two lists that we are holding an informal open
day here at the University of Ulster on the 21st of August to look at
our Free and Open Source products for managing Personal Development
Planning (PDSystem) and Managing Work Based Learning (OPUS). You can
find the announcement and booking form (and more information about the
products) here:
http://foss.ulster.ac.uk
Apologies for those of you that have already received that bit, but we
decided today it might be helpful to offer installations on that date.
In other words, if you can bring a "box" with you we will, if at all
possible, install the software on it for you on the day so you can take
it back to your university / college with you.
Since we will want to do this quickly and efficiently, I would ask that:
* if you plan to bring a box, do let us know in advance;
* it doesn't need to be especially powerful, so a desktop computer you
plan to discard may well be suitable, at least for initial testing;
* you should not bring a keyboard, mouse or monitor so you can just
package up the box itself;
* have *nothing* you value on the hard disc, since for speed we will
wipe it clean;
* if you know it, tell us the architecture of the machine (i386, amd64,
ia64, if that all means nothing, never mind!);
* we will install a free operating system (Debian GNU/Linux) and the
(free) software on it;
* no guarantees, since we will be trying to do potentially many
installations in a single day, if your hardware is particularly odd, it
might not be possible to install in the hour or so available to us;
* first come first serve, there is a limit to how many installations we
will manage on a single day.
I hope this might prove useful to those of you that worry about the
installation, and let you try things out.
I will possibly try to offer installations at the ASET conference in
Plymouth too, to those that are there, and if I can arrange the logistics.
CT.
