The limestone mines on the Ashburnham estate in East Sussex were operated in
the late 18th/early 19th centuries. The early development of these mines on a
large scale was the work of miners brought in from Derbyshire. The day
books list production of the mines in 'yards' of stone, development of the levels
in 'yards' and the unit of payment for lime burnt was in 'kilns'.
