Subject: Mature Adults (50+) Learning - Institute of Education

Dear Colleagues

You may have heard that we carried out a survey last year to find out how
and whether we could or should improve our support for older adult learners. I
attach a short paper that I published after our initial analysis of part of that
survey [which we are still working on] that you may find of interest.

I am also writing to let you know that the new M level module
Issues in Educating and Training Mature Adults (50+)
ran for the first time this year, and will run again in the coming session. It aims
to enhance the professionalism of all staff supporting the learning activities of
the increasingly significant number of older mature learners. We see it as an
important addition to the educational CV for the foreseeable future, and can
also be seen as an excellent base for a research project. We would welcome
your [or your staff's] participation and input.

The need for such a course arises because more of us are living longer and
later life learning has assumed a new importance, accepted as one of the
factors in ageing well. It addresses key questions related to the contexts of
mature learning within mixed- or older-age classrooms, especially the value of
older learners' contributions. It studies the education or training needs and
motivations of mature adults in the light of their capabilities and transferable
skills. Participants enhance their understanding of the older person's learning
styles, so as to build increased awareness and inclusion into their pedagogy.

We aim to make this interactive course an enjoyable as well as content rich
way of approaching such topics. It is delivered mainly by flexible, structured
email collaboration in addition to the 2 weekend meetings at the Institute of
Education. Full completion gains 30 M level credits. An audit certificate is also
available, as is the option to spread the course over more than one year to fit
personal CPD plans.

Dates: January - March 2009
Delivery: 2 weekends plus 6 weeks email.
Fee: £620 by bank transfer, credit card or instalments
Limited numbers
