The Italian Art Society is pleased to announce the call for papers for
IAS sponsored Sessions at the 44th International Congress on Medieval
Studies, May 7-10 2009
This year the IAS will be sponsoring four linked sessions entitled:
Performance, Performativity and Italian Arts: Church, Cloister, City and
Court
We propose a series of four linked sessions dealing with performance and
performative acts that focus on or are focused by works of art. The
sessions are structured around four broadly construed spatial zones --
the church, the cloister, the city [and contado], and the court. We
seek papers that explore performance and performativity in all their
possible manifestations, including but by no means limited to religious
rituals (church consecrations, Easter dramas, penance), civic rituals
(ceremonial entries, public trials or punishments, apotropaic
processions), personal rituals (marriage, birth, death, penance,
prayer), cultural productions (dance, music, theater), or the acts of
commissioning and producing works of art. Each paper should explore an
interconnection between performance and the visual or architectural
arts, elucidating the ontologies, meanings, and functions of works of
art that are performed upon or perform within these varied yet
intertwined religious and secular realms.
