One cause could be overheating. If your machine has picked up a lot of dust it may be clogging the Heatsync and various other important parts of the machine, this will cause the Processor to overheat and the Fans will be over working to keep it cool. If you can, giving your machine a check for large amounts of dust and removing any you find may solve the problem (On PCs its much easier to open up the machines and clean all the components, it may be more difficult with a MAC however)
