I've not had a great deal of experience with Sharepoint but have found the
wiki tools very basic. There are a lot of better open source systems out
there.

Subject: [FISH-TECHNICAL] MS Sharepoint collaborative software
Hello folks,
Has anyone had much experience with implementing Microsoft Sharepoint
systems? I'm planning a project to roll it out as a collaborative tool to
support research projects funded by English Heritage, and I'm shamelessly
hoping we can learn from any other uses of Sharepoint in the cultural
heritage sector.
The intention would be to provide temporary online workspaces to support
collaboration between various EH and external experts working on a project.
Basically an online document store, providing version control, plus some
other features such as bulletin boards, issues lists, contact details etc
which could then be archived once a project was completed.
There are related data standards issues - for example Sharepoint gives you
very flexible options for adding metadata to documents, but we would need to
decide what would be appropriate.
Best wishes
