DESCRIPTION:
The Society for Disability Arts and Culture [S4DAC] is a vibrant,
registered, not-for-profit, Vancouver-based organization established
in 1998. The Society seeks a versatile and creative self-starter to
work closely with the founding Artistic Director and the Board of
Directors. This position will be responsible to and report to the
Board of Directors. Initially, the position will begin as a part-time,
one-year contract with potential to become a full-time permanent
position.
The Society produces, supports and presents work by artists with
disabilities working in a variety of disciplines. The organization's
mission is built on the belief that art is a powerful tool for social
change and that artists with disabilities can: build a strong sense of
identity and self-respect among people with disabilities; educate the
public by shattering historical stereotypes with innovative and
challenging creative work; and contribute new perspectives to the
cultural diversity of our various communities. Since 1998, the Society
has completed several projects per year, including mixed-abilities
dance workshops and performances; juried visual arts exhibits; a
theatre development lab and theatre co-production; integrated choir
performances; and mounted and presented a groundbreaking international

S4DAC is proud to have pioneered Canada's contribution to a
flourishing international disability culture movement and is poised to
contribute significantly to the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic
cultural offerings.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Create and implement a funding program for exciting projects and for
organizational sustainability:
• monitor the overall fiscal performance of the organization
• prepare the Society's operating and project budgets
• assist in the preparation of applications for financial
assistance to all potential funding agencies and corporate sponsors
• maintain a schedule of application deadlines and reporting
requirements, and ensure that funder requirements are met
Build the Society's connections within the arts, disability,
philanthropic and business communities
Create a communication strategy for the organization, including public education
Work with the board of directors to strengthen organizational capacity:
• submit monthly written reports to the Board, including financials
• provide administrative and strategic support for the fundraising
activities of the Board
• participate in Board meetings and Board committee meetings as required
Work closely with the Artistic Director to:
• plan, direct and coordinate programming for the Society and the
kickstART Festival
• plan and oversee special projects and events
• hire, train and supervise office and project staff
Communicate with accountants and auditors, and assist with year-end tasks
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience managing a mid-sized not-for-profit organization is
desirable, including:
the administration of budgets and grants
fundraising in the public and private sectors
building and maintaining supportive relationships with the members of
a board of directors and other volunteers
Experience with or knowledge of the arts and disability communities
Ideally, the successful candidate will be passionately committed to
the importance of the arts in community and specifically interested in
the unique challenges and contributions of artists with disabilities.
VALUE OF CONTRACT: up to $40,000
