Dear All,
This request is being made as the result of a recent hearing which decided
to return a single Disabled woman to Lagos. She was raped in Nigeria and
was the victim of repeated abuse there. She fled to Manchester in the UK.
Since coming to the UK this woman, who is a permanent wheelchair user, has
given birth in July of this year. The Home Office wants to return her,
saying that Lagos is safe for her to go back to.
Given her personal economic and social circumstances, it is very unlikely
that she will get access to the medical/social support she needs as a
Disabled Person nor does she believe that she will be in a financial or
personal position properly to care for her child. She believes that this
means she will be forced to beg and that the prospects for both herself and
her baby are bleak.
The judge in her case has said that if she can compile evidence in the form
of a report containing reputable information from in-Country sources
concerning her prospects were she and her baby to be returned to Lagos, she
may be able to have her case reconsidered. She is ineligible for legal aid
to assist her to produce this report. She does not have access to any
personal resources which she could use to finance the production of such a
document.
Do you have any information which may assist her to fight to remain in the
UK? Do you have access to any relevant in-Country information? Do you have
contact with a reputable NGO that could provide up-to-date facts and figures
to illustrate the position facing impoverished single Disabled females with
young children in Lagos in order to support and evidence her claim for
asylum in the UK?
Please email [log in to unmask] if you can help or if you know anyone
who may be able to do so.
Thanks in advance for any advice and information you may be able to provide.
Best wishes,
Mike Higgins
(in a personal capacity)
