University of Amsterdam

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is a university with an

internationally acclaimed profile, located at the heart of the Dutch

capital. As well as a world centre for business and research, Amsterdam

is a hub of cultural and media activities. The University of Amsterdam

is a member of the League of European Research Universities.

The Faculty of Science at the Universiteit van Amsterdam is one of

Europe's foremost institutions of higher education and research in its

chosen fields of specialization. It plays an active role in

international science networks and collaborates with universities and

industry. The Faculty has approximately 2,000 students and 1,500 staff

members spread over four departments and ten research institutes. Each

institute has its own research programme, a substantial part of which is

externally funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific

Research (NWO), the Dutch government, the EU and various private

enterprises.

In 2010, the Faculty will relocate to the Science Park Amsterdam.

Ambitious building projects are paving the way for this relocation. The

move will make the Park one of the largest centres of academic research

in the Netherlands.

Part of the research in the Informatics Institute focuses on interactive

complex information systems, processing large amounts of data in a

distributed setting. This research goal is reflected in the three

laboratories of the institute: the Computing, System Architecture, and

Programming Laboratory (CSP), the Intelligent Systems Laboratory

Amsterdam (ISLA), and the Human Computer Studies (HCS) laboratory.

For the ‘Distributed Information and Decision-Making for Environmental

Management' project (which is supported by an FP7 grant), the team is

looking for a

Postdoctoral researcher

1.0 FTE

vacancy number 08-1042

For both internal and external candidates

The overall project addresses computer assisted monitoring and decision

making in industrial chemical incidents and pollution in an

industrialized and populated area. In the overall project, a robust and

flexible gas detection system will be developed based on Distributed

Perception Networks. This detection network combines sensor data with

useful information from humans via mobile devices. The specific project

of the postdoc position advertised in this vacancy concerns the

development of prototype interfaces between the system and human users

based on web, voice and mobile text message interaction. This in order

to conduct a series of experiments in which specific aspects of the

design of the interface and the human system dialogue are evaluated to

optimize trust in and acceptance of the system, as well as reliability

of the information provided by human users. The results of these

experiments will produce detailed guidelines for the design of the

human-system interaction.

Tasks

The postdoc will work on the development of scenarios and prototypes for

the purpose of carrying out socio-psychological experiments to

understand the effects of specific designs of the web/SMS/voice

interface on human trust in and acceptance of the system as well as

reliability/accuracy of the information provided by the humans.

The postdoc will work closely with the researchers and developers

implementing a distributed information fusion system using Bayesian

networks.

Requirements

PhD in Human Computer Interaction, Computer Science, Psychology, or

Communication Studies (with a strong focus on interactive technologies)

Experience in social-psychological laboratory experiments with human

subjects and interactive technologies, usability testing skills, some

programming, prototyping and simulator programming experience,

Some understanding of the state of the art AI techniques for the

reasoning with uncertainty. In particular, the candidate will have to

understand the principles of Bayesian Network Technologies; in case the

candidate does not have sufficient experience with Bayesian networks,

he/she must be willing to acquire the basic knowledge during the project.

Further information

Further information can be obtained from Dr. Vanessa Evers,

[log in to unmask], +31 (0)20 525 6789.
