At the National Library of Scotland I can confirm that we do not use sheet
feeder scanners for 'old and valuable books'. Manuscripts and anything fragile
or bound is scanned with overhead cameras. The digital cameras in use here
are fitted with preservation support cradles which enable safe scanning from a
distance. However, we do use a sheet-fed scanner with rollers to scan
robust, relatively recent Ordnance Survey maps. We have used this type of
scanning equipment for some 15 years without damage to the OS map
collection. This must be what the researcher was referring to.
