1.1 CMALT offer extended:
We have received a large number of applications for ALT's Certified
Membership scheme, CMALT, at the preferential rate of £47.50. This is
supported by a generous grant from the JISC. The JISC have now given
us permission to extend this offer to the end of September in the
first instance, which will be good news to anyone who missed the end
of July deadline yet still wishes to apply. The JISC-supported rate of
a 50% reduction is open any individual working in UK HE/FE (including
Adult & Community Learning and Work Based Learning) who is entered for
CMALT before 30 September 2008. After registering, applicants have up
to 6 months to prepare and submit a CMALT portfolio for peer review
and upon passing will receive a Certificate and pin badge and are
eligible to use 'CMALT' as post-nominal letters.

2.2. ALT-C 2008 Pre-Conference Workshop:
Two Nations – the Small Business & the Digital Divide
This two hour workshop is jointly hosted by ALT-C and Digital 2010. It
will combine creative discussion and short interventions in a fast
moving programme focused on the significance of the conference theme
for small businesses.
It will be facilitated by Gilly Salmon, Professor of e-Learning &
Learning Technology at the University of Leicester.
Topics to be covered and expected outcomes:
The programme will explore realities and responses, leading to
recommendations which will be presented post-conference to
stakeholders in Regional Development Agencies, Business Links, the
Learning & Skills Council and Sector Skills Councils.
The agenda will cover:
• Scene: What evidence of a digital divide is there in the business world?
• Causes: Can the causes be classified? Are they systemic or localised?
• Significance: Does it really matter to the businesses or in the wider economy?
• Response: What can be done by those involved in business support,
training or wider education?

2.4. Second Life in real life: education beyond the hype.
Thursday 23 October 2008.
National College for School Leadership (NCSL), Nottingham.
Led by Dr Steven Warburton, King's College, London.
Offered again due to popular demand, the aim of this workshop is to
introduce participants to immersive 3D environments from a practical
perspective and to stimulate critical inquiry into the possibilities
that massive multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) offer learning
and teaching practice.

3.1 The HEFCE, on behalf of the UK funding bodies, has announced the
new chair of JISC. Professor Sir Timothy O'Shea, Principal and
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, has been appointed to
succeed Professor Sir Ron Cooke as the new chair of JISC from 1

3.2 As part of the government's consultation to gain opinions and
views on its higher education debate, JISC is hosting a blog on its
JISC Involve platform. The DIUS launched a debate on Higher Education,
in February 2008 when it announced the intention to develop a
framework for Higher Education for the next ten to fifteen years. For

3.3 In April the HEFCE issued a Circular Letter, 'Changes to
fundability status of students for 2008-09 as a result of the ELQ
policy'. There have been a number of amendments and final
consolidated guidance on fundability status will be incorporated in
the HESES08 and HEIFES08 surveys, which will be available from
mid-September.

3.4 The HEFCE will lead a debate on developing local higher education

Accessible online learning: supporting disabled students
This new course launches in September and offers practitioners, with
an interest in accessible learning, the chance to learn about good
practice in this area. It is a 20 week online course about the
challenges for disabled students in post-16 education. The closing
