Hi,
When the tram system was introduced in Sheffield the platforms were
raised and a range of tactile paving was installed. One set indicated
the platform edge and another showed where the tram doors would be when
the vehicles stopped. Such was it success that the local Access Group
were very clear that they wanted to have guidance paving to indicate the
points at which a bus would stop installed on all bus stops. This was
contrary to the guidance and the council sought the Dft's feedback but
went ahead nonetheless on a rolling programme linked to various funding
LPT funding regimes.
Importantly, the guidance paving did two things. One is the obvious for
the disabled person, but the second was that it trained the drivers not
to stop out in the road wherever they felt like because they were
supposed to be aiming fort the guidance paving.
I've been gone from the council almost three and a bit year's so I don't
where this story has now got to. You may wish to contact Brain Messider,
the current Access Officer at Sheffield City Council to see what has
become of this experiment.

Subject: Tactile paving & raised bus stops

Hi,
we're planning a guided Busway which will run partly on current streets
and partly on a guided section. On the street sections there will be a
raised kerb at the stops of between 180 and 200mm and on the guided
section it'll be about 300mm.
Inclusive Mobility etc guidance is clear not to use tactiles on raised
kerbs at bus stops but does include them for Light Rapid Transit
systems. To err on the side of caution the designers of the stops have
included lozenge type tactile paving on both, I think as the 180-200 is
above the Inclusive Mobility guidelines of 160-180.
Is this the right approach? Your advice appreciated as we don't want to
send out confusing messages.
Thanks
Paul
