The paper usually cited is: Watson et al: Acute Wernickes Encephalopathy Precipitated by Glucose Loading. Ir J Med Sci 1981;150:301. 4 patients. However these were patients with established Wernicke's that worsened when given prolonged glucose infusions with thiamine and none of whom had any lasting ill effects from the non administration of thiamine.
