Dear Soo and Stacy,
Truly appalling account of "birth" in these hospitals. I agree with the
suggestions of Soo in terms of dissemination of the information and in
terms of petitioning the Dominican authorities. I also wonder if Stacy
would agree that some American academics, both North and South America,
ought to be contacted with this description. I would be happy to
contact several obstetricians I know who may be able to exercise more
pressure on the medical profession. This may help further.
I welcome your comments.
Marianne

This is truly shocking Stacy - though we know these practices go on to a
greater or lesser extent, you make the truly barbaric nature of it very
vivid. I wonder if we, the GANM group, and the normalbirth research
group might consider a petition to the Dominican Republic minister for
health, copied to WHO, to investigate maternity practices in the
republic, in the light of current best evidence?
Would you mind if I circulated your letter to these other lists?
All the best

Hi,
I found this group upon returning this past Sunday from a week long trip
to work in a birthing hospital in the Dominican Republic. I am a
traditional midwife and I live in the US. Upon my return, I sent this
letter to a statewide midwifery organization asking what could be done.
They directed me to you, attached is my letter. Please take the time
time to read it and let me know your thoughts, thank you-much love-Stacy
