Although the Disability Rights Convention is important globally, it only comes
into legal effect in the countries that ratify it. Signing the Convention
simply denotes an intention to ratify, and does not bring it into force in the
signatory's country. So far,34 countries have ratified the Convention (see the
UN Enable website: www.un.org/disabilities) for up to date info) . Canada has
not ratified it, Australia has. The UK has said that it intends to ratify it
by the end of 2008, though it looks likely to do so with reservations.
