I have several recollections along these lines - such as looking for one
locomotive drawing from a collection of 3,000+ all stored in plan chests
in the basement store. We looked for one particular one which appeared
to be missing for several weeks until we realised it was framed on the
office wall. Another was discovering in a file a bunch of descriptive
labels which had been printed reading something like "Concrete Testing
Machine (This object is not worth keeping) Inv. 1900/1234"

This is a very dangerous route to start people reminiscing - one of my
favourite old accession cards from St Fagans was ( part of a large
collections of chairs which entered the national museum in 1911 ) -
'Chair - old, Welsh' - I also still carry a disturbing number of
accession numbers in my head -= oh dear!

To Patricia:
I remember a classic line in the first Accession Register at Bury Art
Gallery and Museum where I worked from 1987 to 1997; the institution
started collecting museum objects in 1907, having started life purely as
an Art Gallery when it opened in 1901. Listed among a rather eclectic
mix of early acquisitions was: "Swordfish - sword only". From what I
remember, said sword was still there in the store and hopefully still
is!
Best wishes
Jim Garretts, Keeper, the People's History Museum.
