Postdoctoral Fellow in VLBI Techniques and Applications at JIVE
THE JOINT INSTITUTE FOR VLBI IN EUROPE (JIVE) is seeking candidates for a
fixed-term appointment as a Postdoctoral Fellow in VLBI techniques and
applications to be located at JIVE, Dwingeloo, The Netherlands.
The Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE) operates an advanced 16-station
MkIV-standard VLBI data processor (correlator) to support VLBI astronomical
observations made with the European VLBI Network (EVN). The EVN is often used in
conjunction with the MERLIN interferometer in the UK and the Very Long Baseline
Array in the US. The JIVE facilities are also involved in a number of Space
Science projects, such as VLBI tracking of planetary missions and VLBI
experiments with orbital radio telescopes. JIVE is located in Dwingeloo, in The
Netherlands, at the headquarters of ASTRON (Netherlands Institute for Radio
Astronomy), which is the host institute for JIVE. Further information regarding
JIVE and the EVN can be obtained from www.jive.nl and www.evlbi.org.
We invite applications for a position of JIVE Postdoctoral Fellow for Space and
Innovative VLBI Techniques and Applications becoming available from the third
quarter of 2008. The appointee will be expected to spend 50% of time on research
and development of innovative VLBI techniques and 50% on her/his individual
research. Assigned responsibilities will be adjusted to the personal expertise
and scientific interest of the successful candidate but have to be in one or
several areas from the following list:
* VLBI astrometry or geodesy;
* Special correlator applications (e.g. VLBI spectroscopy, wide-field imaging,
pulsar gating);
* Astronomical and space science data processing and software development;
* Celestial mechanics and space flight dynamics, including fundamental physics
applications;
* Advanced signal processing (in particular, in space radio navigation).
The position may also involve other duties, such as liaison between R&D projects
conducted at JIVE in the areas of advanced VLBI data processing and external
users (such as planetary and space science mission communities).
The position requires a PhD degree in astronomy, physics, space and planetary
science, geodesy, radio physics or other relevant field, and an adequate
knowledge of radio astronomy techniques. Applicants of any nationality are
eligible to apply. A good command of written and spoken English is essential.
The appointment is offered for one year in the first instance with the
possibility of an extension for one year. The appointee will be in the formal
employ of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). The
position carries a competitive salary plus an excellent package of secondary
benefits, including relocation expenses.
Please send your application (by e-mail only) to the personnel department of
JIVE, attn. Ms D. Verweij, [log in to unmask] Applications should include a
CV, statement of interest and list of publications, together with three letters
of reference, which may be sent separately. All application materials should
arrive by 15 September 2008, mentioning ref. Postdoc VLBI techniques. Further
information can be obtained from Dr. L.I. Gurvits ([log in to unmask]) and/or Dr.
H.J. van Langevelde ([log in to unmask]). Telephone enquiries: +31-521-596500.
