Hi Sue
I dont work for the NHS and never have in an OH role so i am not an
expert. However, referring to Palmer et al (2007) 'fitness to work'
page 334 they advise the following quote
"health care workers who are e-antigen positive must not perform
exposure prone procedures"
it adds that advice on the work that e-antigen positive health care
workers may perform should be sought from a specialist occupational
health physician. They also comment on accessing DoH guidelines. I
would assume there would have to be specialist counselling with
disclosure of the condition to the employee - you don't mention your
policy and procedure in place for this.
Very difficult moral, ethical and dilemma - support in one hand, the
difficulties with protecting confidentiality due to potential removal
from their role in theatre if they are performing EPP.
Hopefully you will get there and i wish you well - can you call the
RCN for your own support or similar organisation that you may have
membership with ?
regards
steph
