ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT MUSEUMS

Bulletin Digest LATEST ISSUE June 2008
*	Museums' success was like "light on a glitter ball" Adrian Babbidge found in his latest research for AIM - Defining Success for Independent Museums.
*	Defining success for independent museums, Adrian Babbidge of Egeria Heritage Consultancy, undertaking new research for AIM for the third year running, based his findings on statistics of the AIM 50, 50 museums chosen from across AIM's membership.
*	Roy Clare, chief executive of the new "lighter on its feet" MLA (Museums, Libraries & Archives Council) promised a less "quangoesque" future for the sector, but put little flesh on the bones of its major restructure at the AIM Annual Conference.
*	STIR - Saving the Industrial Revolution is a new initiative launched by AIM's president Sir Neil Cossons, aimed at securing a sustainable future for Britain's preserved industrial archaeological sites, buildings and collections.
*	A report into the first phase of AIM's Sustainability Grant Scheme has "more than achieved its aims" say its independent evaluers.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES MONTH

Record year for MGM2008
MGM2008 has broken all records in terms of media coverage and participation. The evaluation survey shows higher than before satisfaction levels. So many thanks to those who completed the evaluation form and, of course, thanks to all of you who worked so hard to make it a success.
<http://tinyurl.com/mgm08report>

Looking to the future
Working with MLA, we are commissioning a short research project on whether there is a role for a future MGM-style celebration on an annual basis and if so, what it might be. The outcome will be announced in October. In the meantime, the Campaign for Museums is not in a position to proceed with plans for a Museums and Galleries Month for 2009, as funding is not in place. Log on to <http://www.mgm.org.uk> for news updates.

Nuit des Musees - plan now for 2009

Great cities such as Moscow, Barcelona, Paris (of course), St Petersburg and Sofia as well as UK cities joined the celebrations. Textile Conservation Centre - "We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to keep the Textile Conservation Centre open."
Read the Government's response: Public funding for higher education will have increased by 30% in real terms between 1997 and 2010. Southampton University is receiving its fair share of the total level of government funding and now operates on a total annual budget of some £325 million. Within that total, it is solely responsible for deciding on its mission and strategy including which departments and centres it opens, closes, expands or contracts, taking account of competing priorities and student demand. The Government notes that the University has paid tribute to the significant achievements of the Textile Conservation Centre before and since becoming part of the University and it supports the work of the University and the Centre to look at solutions to the problems which have been identified but it is not the Government's role to override the decisions of the University on this issue.

Optional extra? Well, if you want but...
"This isn't the job most people think that they will be doing when they go into museums," one interviewee noted, "it's just not an area we're trained in. Museum managers are able to deliver their product in difficult conditions, and often with low budgets. Ask us if there are other ways to lever in better results, and of course the answer will be yes. It's just how do we find the time and expertise to find out what these other methods are?"

"We want people to sign up, log on and explore to find out more." The full site will launch next year, but the pilot version is available at <http://www.dip-online.org>

FUNDING AND AWARDS

Waitrose to donate £2.2 million to 6,840 local charities
A new community scheme from supermarket Waitrose will donate £2.28 million to 6,840 local charities and good causes over the next 12 months, as chosen by its customers and employees. The 'Community Matters' initiative will allocate £1,000 a month to each of Waitrose's 190 branches to distribute amongst three local community projects. To be considered for a donation, good causes and charities should contact their local Waitrose branch store. Partners (Waitrose employees) will then vote which three causes to support each month at their branch's 'PartnerVoice' forum, a means of voicing opinion on branch issues. Customers and Partners can also put forward the names of organisations they would like their local branch to support by filling out a leaflet in store.

The future is unpredictable - perhaps more so now than ever before. But a new guide maintains that trustees and managers can take steps to reduce the risk of making poor decisions, whatever the wider conditions, if they take a structured approach. Lobbying works - it's official
Campaigners have more influence over the legislative process than they realise, according to a book published by the Hansard Society. The book "Law in the Making: Influence and Change in the Legislative Process" says that parliamentarians, especially those in opposition, rely heavily on information provided by external groups. The book examines five pieces of legislation passed in the past six years, tracking them through each stage of the legislative process and noting influences. It also contains 80 interviews with government ministers, MPs, peers and pressure groups.

RESOURCES

The Entrepreneurial Museum
UK consumers are becoming better educated, more aspirational and more discriminating about how they spend their time, energy and money. Entrepreneurialism is about evolving our understanding of consumer expectations and needs, delivering against them as standard, and fully capitalising on the enormous range of opportunities that this mindset presents. Over the coming months, we invite you to join the discussion, or receive weekly bite-size ideas and resources direct to your inbox, by registering at: www.IntelligentNaivety.com

'Entrepreneurship'..?
Everyone seems to have their own meaning for the word 'entrepreneurship', so what do we mean by it? "In the public sector," one of our contacts observed, "the title 'entrepreneur' seems to refer to anyone who takes any initiative." They are not alone in this view. Emerging from our initial interviews for the MLA West Midland's Entrepreneurial Museum research is a consensus that entrepreneurship relates to "better ways of working", being "more resourceful" in using existing finance and sourcing new finance, and generally developing a plurality of income streams.

Cover-up mummies to be unwrapped
Manchester Museum's controversial decision to cover up its Egyptian mummies has been reversed. Cloths have been wrapped around three exhibits while a consultation looks at how human remains are displayed when the gallery is redeveloped. The museum, part of the University of Manchester, was criticised by experts who said the decision could damage its academic reputation. One of the mummies has now been unwrapped and one partially covered. The museum wants visitors to give their opinions on the way the mummies are displayed as part of a 12-month consultation.
