Dear List,
At Wheal Martyn china clay museum, near St Austell in Cornwall, there is a wooden pump pipe/rising main, bound with iron straps, measuring about 1ft diameter by 10ft long and dating to the mid-C18 or earlier. The site accession book states that this came from Dolcoath mine, possibly in 1984, although it could have been early 1970s. Unfortunately, it fails to mention who gave it, and where exactly it came from.
Does anyone know - or can they point me in the direction of someone who might be able to tell me? I would like to be able to date it.
