Mines at Grit were operating in Medieval times, the earliest 'modern'
references I have are to the involvement of a John Lawrence from c1600,
though this is only refers to leases held by his last descendant in 1898, a
list of these leases may still exist but cannot at present be found. The
More family acquired the land mid 17th century and investigated old mines in
1655 and granted a lease (possibly a renewal?) in 1676. In 1677 the mine was
seized, at gun point, by representatives of the Lord of the Manor (Lord
Herbert of Chirbury) the ensuing law case being settled in Mores favour. I
have little more information until a later John Lawrence's involvement in
the 1760s.
Pennerley. The earliest reference I have here is a lease of 1727 which
refers to there being earlier works.
I would be interested to follow up any leads on the 1720s at either mine.
